The paper is aimed at drawing reader's attention to the most important problems which engineers have to face when designing structures by means of reliability-based approaches. Taking into consideration the limited extent of this paper, only essential features can be discussed and the principles of these approaches will be demonstrated by simple pictures rather than by complicated formulas.
